Every year, Pete Tong and his illustrious group of well-versed friends choose one Essential Mix of the year to be honored as the best of the rest. Past winners have included Flume, Nicolas Jaar, Flying Lotus, and more.
The 2016 Essential Mix of the Year winner is none other than London’s Midland with what Tong called “a real timeless classic from start to finish.” It was damn-near unanimous, in fact. Midland also took home the prize for Mixmag’s Tune of the Year for his song “Final Credits.” The gorgeous mix opens with the sumptuous atmosphere of Maps’ “Ache” and works its way through beats that are tribal, jazzy, introspective, infectious, spacey, and sensual. No wonder Midland was given such a high honor.
