Mick Jagger is in talks to turn Oscar-nominated documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” into a one-hour scripted TV series and a Broadway musical, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Jagger and Victoria Pearman would executive produce the TV series through their Jagged Films banner alongside the film’s director Morgan Neville.
Like the film, the series and the musical adaptations would follow the lives of backup singers who perform in the shadows of some of the biggest music stars in the business. The film took a look at the history of backup singers, but the TV series would only depict contemporary performers.
Talks are ongoing that would also bring some of the singers featured in the documentary to the Broadway version including Darlene Love and Lisa Fischer. Love is no stranger to Broadway, having appeared in Hairspray. Love and Fischer, Merry Clayton andJudith Hill have been making the rounds during awards season, including singing the national anthem at the Rose Bowl.
20 Feet From Stardom debuted at Sundance last year where it was acquired by Radius-TWC. The crowd-pleasing pic went on to become the highest-grossing documentary of the year and an Oscar nominee for best documentary. Neville is on hand at Sundance this year as a documentary juror.
Though Jagger isn’t a producer on the 20 Feet From Stardom documentary, he appears extensively in interviews and footage.
