Diane Warren Explains How Michelle Obama’s ‘This Is for My Girls’ All-Star Anthem Came to Be
The track — which features Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Zendaya, Kelly Rowland, Lea Michele, Janelle Monae, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle — was remixed by Tracy Young. It supports the White House’s Let Girls Learn initiative and the estimated 62 million girls globally without access to education. All proceeds from U.S. iTunes purchases of the song will go to the Peace Corps Let Girls Learn Fund.

“To merely say that I’m honored to be remixing this song doesn’t capture the flood of my emotions,” Tracy Young said in a statement to Billboard. “Peace, education, love, respect, and all in the name of impacting women on a global scale … What could be better than this?” The thumpy dance reworking of the original tune is dubbed the Tracy Young First Lady Remix Edit.
On March 16, first lady Michelle Obama joined “This Is for My Girls’” songwriter Diane Warren and featured artist Missy Elliott at South by Southwest for a keynote discussion about Let Girls Learn. During the talk, Obama expressed her gratitude for those involved with its recording, saying, “I just want to thank all the artists who participated; Diane, obviously, for writing such a phenomenal anthem.”
“100 percent of the proceeds are going to go to our Let Girls Learn Peace Corps fund to help these young women get the education that they need. And it’s just a sign of what a group of women can do together.”
