Caribbean dancehall riddims dominated pop radio, dance and hip-hop in 2017, but no one understands the subtle nuances of that tropical sound like the locals. Michael Brun was born and raised in the Haitian streets, and he blends his native island’s flavor with beautiful R&B sensuality on his latest single “Easy On My Love” featuring New York City soul singer Janelle Kroll.
“I was really impressed with Janelle’s performance on her singles ‘Barricade’ and ‘Blush,’ and was excited to work together with her,” Brun says in an emailed statement. “We had a really productive studio session together along with songwriter TYLERxCORDY, and ‘Easy On My Love’ was the result. It just feels right.”
Right is a good word for these feels. This melody is so honest and sweet against Kroll’s heartbreakingly open vocals, it’ll have you fallin’ for that cutie in no time.
“Easy On My Love” is a perfect closer for Brun’s big year. He’s done a lot to bring Haitian sound into the spotlight with his Michael Brun presents: Bayo live performances. He brought the classic Haitian blockparty vibe to Miami Music Week in March, and earlier this month, he sold out the Music Hall of Williamsburg in NYC to bring that feeling to Brooklyn.
Expect more of those Bayo events in 2018, as well as Haitian-inspired tracks as seen through a lens of international collaborators. For now, enjoy “Easy On My Love” below, out everywhere on Brun’s Kid Coconut label.
