Mexican singer/songwriter Christian Chávez was recognized as the Outstanding Spanish Language Music Artist at the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco.
Chavez was selected to receive the trophy for his work in increasing the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The award was presented by TV personality Mario Lopez on May 14.
Chavez, whose single “Libertad” has received more than two million views on Youtube, announced to the world he was gay in 2007 at age 23. The crooner shot to stardom as part of the popular Mexican pop band RBD, which was born out of the telenovela “Rebelde.”
