Mew, the Danish rock group signed to Sony/Epic UK, grabbed the trophies for best band and best album for “Frengers” Friday (Jan. 30) at the second Steppeulven awards ceremony, held at Vega, Copenhagen’s top club venue.
The awards were started last year by Danish music critics organization FDM to counter the 14-year-old Danish Music Awards, which are based on sales.
“We want to focus on artistic quality instead of commercial success among music consumers,” says FDM chairman Uffe Christensen.
FDM’s nearly 20 members nominate and choose the winners from 11 categories and only Danish acts and organizations are eligible.
This year’s ‘pioneer’ award went to the Danish Rock Council ROSA, the state-funded organization that invests in music talent and events.
