Over the course of five albums, Toronto’s Metric has become an indie institution, but the group’s latest single is as fresh-faced as ever.
The energetic “Youth Without Youth” lands today on the band’s own Metric Music International, in conjunction with Mom + Pop Records. It’s the first single from the June 12-due “Synthetica,” the band’s sixth studio release — and a glimpse at the album’s themes of artificiality and unrest.
“It was a pretty intense process making that song,” singer Emily Haines explained in a commentary track released along with the song stream on Tuesday. “It started as just one verse, a story, a very slow, sad story about the decaying social state through the eyes of a depraved child.”
The band is offering the song along with five “Synthetica Reflections” tracks as a bonus for album pre-orders on its website and via iTunes. In another service to fans, album downloads will also be packaged with tickets for the band’s fall headlining tour, the dates of which were revealed on Tuesday.
