Metallica is bringing its heavy brand of rock to the ice.
The Hall of Famers have declared Jan. 21 as “Metallica Night,” on what will otherwise be a contest between the hometown San Jose Sharks and their NHL rivals the LA Kings.
In a post on the metal band’s Website, the rockers are threatening an evening of “Metalli-hockey mayhem.” It’s not the first time the four-piece has brought sports and rock together. For the past two baseball seasons, the San Francisco Giants have teamed up with the homegrown heroes for a “Metallica Night,” a tradition that’s set to continue in May 2015.

The blurb on the new NHL initiative goes on, “ANOTHER Bay Area Metallica-sports tie-in?” Well, as some of you may know, we have been long supporters of the Sharks going back to the mid-90’s when the team moved permanently to San Jose… over the years we’ve made many treks down to the Shark Tank. So it’s actually pretty fitting that we finally connect with the team for a night of metal and hockey and we want you to come along and partake of the festivities with us. We’ll be on hand for the first strains of Seek & Destroy, kick off the game with the puck drop, and partake in some of the intermission fun and games that Sharks fans know and love.”
“Metallica Night” tickets go on sale from Dec. 17, and include a commemorative “Metalli-Sharks” shirt (see below). A portion of all sales will benefit the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club, which claims to be America’s “largest and most effective” grassroots environmental organization.
