Merge Records will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a five-day music festival this summer in its homebase of Chapel Hill, N.C. Dubbed XX Merge, the July 22-26 event is expected to feature past and present bands from throughout the label’s history, including some that haven’t performed in years.
Meanwhile, the Shins have been added to the lineup for the covers album included with “SCORE! Merge Records: The First 20 Years,” a subscription-only boxed set with a host of components.
They bolster a covers album roster that already includes Bright Eyes, Broken Social Scene, Death Cab For Cutie, Ted Leo, the National and the New Pornographers.
Proceeds will benefit a variety of charitable causes chosen by curators of the box’s 14 Merge compilations, including R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, David Byrne and Zach Galifianakis.
