John Mellencamp will be among the individuals honored at the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s (HDSA) seventh annual Guthrie Awards dinner in October. The artist will receive the Woody Guthrie Award “for his embodiment of Woody Guthrie’s ideals.”
Also to be honored at the Oct. 2 New York event, hosted by folk artist Judy Collins, will be Columbia University’s Stanley Fahn, M.D. (Guthrie Family Humanitarian Award), Amarin Corporation CEO Rick Stewart (Marjorie Guthrie Leadership Award) and San Diego Chargers president/CEO Dean Spanos and his wife Susie (Harold Leventhal Community Service Award).
Marjorie Guthrie founded the organization that became the HDSA after Woody Guthrie lost his battle with Huntington’s Disease in 1967. The organization supports research into finding a cure and helps families affected by the disease, as well as educating medical professionals and the public.
