Tending The Garden
Melissa Ormond, a 25-year veteran of the live entertainment business, became president of MSG Entertainment last year after serving as the division’s COO since 2008. In her new role, Ormond oversees booking and production operations at such coveted New York music venues as Madison Square Garden, the Theater at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and the Beacon Theatre, as well as the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.; the Chicago Theatre; and the Wang Theater in Boston.
| My Mentor: “I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great people all of whom I have learned a great deal from. If I had to select one person as a mentor, I would have to say Jay Marciano [president/CEO AEG Europe, former president Madison Square Garden Ent., and former president of MCA Concerts] He hired me to work for him in L.A. in 1994. We worked at MCA Concerts for 9 years. I learned a tremendous amount from him about being a talent buyer, having integrity, commitment and dedication. We worked together again in 2005 at MSG Entertainment. I learned a lot about being a manager and an executive from him. He’s a valued friend and a great teacher.”
In 2011, numerous MSGE venues ranked among the highest-grossing buildings around the world, according to Billboard Boxscore. Madison Square Garden, which is in the midst of an extensive renovation and “transformation,” placed sixth on the year-end arena tally, grossing $58.2 million and drawing more than 670,00 people for 48 events. Radio City Music Hall, the Theater at MSG, Beacon Theatre and Chicago Theatre also ranked in the top 10 of their respective venue-capacity categories. Ormond expects to achieve similar success in 2012. “Despite a lot of challenges from an economic standpoint, and some parts of the country having a more difficult time than others, we feel very fortunate about where we are after the last year.”
