Beckett Cypher, Melissa Etheridge’s son with Julie Cypher, has died. He was 21 years old.
In a touching post on her Instagram page, Etheridge writes that Beckett succumbed to opioid addiction. “My heart is broken,” she writes. “I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief.
“We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now.”
She concludes, “I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”
Earlier, a message on Etheridge’s Twitter account confirmed the news, noting that her Facebook Live concert for the day has been cancelled. “We’re sad to inform you that Melissa’s son Beckett passed away and there will not be a Concerts From Home show today,” the tweet reads.

Etheridge and Cypher had two children together via artificial insemination during their 10-year partnership. Bailey was born in February of 1997 and Beckett was born in November of the following year. Their biological father was later revealed to be singer David Crosby.
