Meghan Trainor has been selected to receive ASCAP’s Vanguard Award at the PRO’s upcoming Pop Music Awards, taking place May 18 in Los Angeles. The honor is bestowed upon songwriters helping to shape American music, and Trainor has done just that in a few short years.
Trainor’s sophomore album, 2016’s Thank You, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, her second straight top three release, while single “No” became her third top five Billboard Hot 100 hit, reaching No. 3 in April of last year. Previous hits include “All About That Bass,” “Lips Are Movin” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” featuring John Legend. Recently she scored a No. 1 on country radio as a songwriter with Lauren Alaina‘s “Road Less Traveled.”
“From the moment we heard Meghan’s music, we knew she was a talent to be reckoned with,” said ASCAP president Paul Williams. “Her fresh, undeniable pop instincts have taken her to the top of the charts and we could not be more thrilled to celebrate her success.”
Past ASCAP Vanguard Award honorees include Arcade Fire, Beck, St. Vincent, the Beastie Boys, Modest Mouse, The Strokes, Sara Bareilles and the (newly shrunken) Band of Horses.
As previously announced, the invite-only event will also see Diane Warren receive the prestigious Founders Award, ASCAP’s highest honor. The six-time ASCAP songwriter of the year will join the likes of John Mellencamp, Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell as a recipient of the award.
The 34th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards take place May 18 at the Wiltern in Los Angeles.
