With five nominations each, singer/songwriters Sarah McLachlan and Nelly Furtado will battle each other at the 2004 Juno Awards. The pair head the list of nominees for 38 Juno categories, revealed this morning (Feb. 11) in Toronto by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).
The awards are set for April 4 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, and will be broadcast nationally in Canada on CTV. Among those performing on this year’s show are McLachlan, Furtado, the Barenaked Ladies and Michael Bublé. Last year’s televised show from Ottawa drew an audience of 2.2 million.
McLachlan is nominated for the fan choice award; top artist; top songwriter for “World on Fire,” ‘Fallen” and “Stupid”; and top album and top pop album for her Nettwerk set “Afterglow.”
Furtado will also contend for top artist honors, in addition to nominations for top songwriter for “Saturdays,” “Powerless” and “Childhood Dreams”; top single for “Powerless”; and top album and top pop album for her Dreamworks set “Folklore.”
The pair is followed by Alberta-native rockers Nickelback and Quebec-bred chanteuse Celine Dion with four Juno nominations each. Nickelback is nominated for the fan choice award, top group, top rock album (“The Long Road”) and top single for “Someday.” Dion’s nominations include the fan choice award, top artist, top album for “One Heart” and top francophone album for “1 Fille: 4 Types”
