Dave Matthews has finalized the track list for his highly anticipated solo debut, “Some Devil.” As first reported here, the album is due Sept. 23 from RCA. Thirteen tracks are featured, including “Gravedigger,” which Matthews has road-tested in solo performances. That cut is included on the album in both a full band and acoustic version.
Matthews is backed on “Some Devil” by longtime sideman Tim Reynolds, bassist Tony Hall (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson) and drummer Brady Blade Jr. (Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris). Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio appears on four tracks and co-wrote the song “Grey Blue Eyes.” A video for “Gravedigger” was shot in Livingston, Mont., by director Mark Pellington (Pearl Jam, U2).
As he told Billboard.com last month, Matthews didn’t know “what I was gonna do with all this” when he first began writing for the project. “And then it all started to fall together and get personality, and started to sound a little more legitimate. Going into it, it just seemed like a good therapy, ya know? And then it started to really take on some personality. [After a few months] we started thinkin’, ‘We might be makin’ something worthwhile here.'”
Fans who preorder “Some Devil” through the Dave Matthews Band’s official Web site will receive a bonus CD featuring seven live tracks from Matthews and Reynolds’ 2003 tour.
Dave Matthews Band is on tour through Sept. 20 in Atlanta. The group plays tomorrow (Aug. 7) and Friday at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash.
