Norway’s Matoma has become a bright light in the modern dance-pop scene. He made his reputation as a tropical house guy, but he soon proved his chops as a pop composer who can mold his signature sound around everything from hip-hop to Latin, house, future bass — whatever the mood calls for.
“Last year when I did the One in a Million Tour, the idea was to play all my new album material to the fans before it even came out as an exclusive treat, but also as part of the process of refining the music,” Matoma tells Billboard Dance.
By the time the album dropped and the tour wrapped, the producer and his team were knee-deep in plans for the next move. He’s spent the past few months locked in his studio, and he found a lot of creativity in looking back to the sounds that helped him make a name for himself. In his case, those were some bootleg remixes of ’90s hip-hop classics, from Eminem‘s “Business” to JAY-Z‘s “Roc Boys” and, most famously, his breakout rework of The Notorious B.I.G.‘s “One More Chance,” though his version is known as “Old Thing Back.”
Now, Matoma gives fans more juicy rinses, one of Tupac’s “So Many Tears” and a new version of “Party We Will Throw Now!” from Warren G, Nate Dogg and The Game. The tunes are available as free gifts to those who text “HOLY MOLY” to (818) 408-6723.
“There’s something about the energy and flow of those old-school rappers that always has and always will bring me such inspiration,” Matoma says. “These are a taste of some of the new stuff I’m putting together for the Holy Moly! Tour, and there’s more where that came from.”
