Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
Matoma has been bringing positive energy to the dance world and beyond since 2015, when he released his debut set Hakuna Matoma. Nearly five years later, the Norwegian producer is continuing his good vibes, most recently while touring around North America with his fellow dance pals Two Friends.
Those who have had a chance to see a Matoma show know the producer brings an array of colorful lights, visuals and confetti to his sets. In the spirit of the Matoma live experience, he’s dedicating his Takeover Tuesday playlist to the energy he has on (and off) stage.
Titled “World of Colors,” Matoma says his playlist is based on his personality and style. “I’m all about spreading love positivity and good energy, and I feel my mission being on this beautiful planet is to paint the world in colorful colors that makes people smile with my music,” he says in statement. “This playlist is a representation of my style of heart and soul. I hope you will feel the music and sentiment in the selection of songs.”
The 11-song playlist appropriately starts with one of Matoma’s tunes, a collaboration with Wilder Woods and Petey called “Keep It Simple.” He caps things off with another track featuring Wilder Woods, but from the singer’s former group Needtobreathe (“Brother”).
Feel the good vibes with Matoma’s World of Colors Takeover Tuesday playlist, and hear from Matoma himself on his song choices below.
Matoma feat. Petey and Wilder Woods, “Keep It Simple”: The song is a very beautifully written song about life and how important it is to keep it simple and never take your loved ones for granted. I feel it resonated well with the theme I chose and therefore I wanted to have it in the playlist.
Surfaces, “Take Some Time”: Recently just discovered this amazing band called Surfaces. Their song, “Take Some Time,” is about doing things on your own time and just enjoying the simple things in life like going to the beach, hanging out with friends and loved ones.
Bastille, “Joy”: A darker color, but also a necessary one. We’re not always feel good all the time and it’s great to have others supporting us to help us out of our slumps.
Why Don’t We, “Big Plans”: “Big Plans” is about trusting and believing in each other regardless of the circumstances. Love these boys and this song!!!
Mercer, “Your Love”: Sometimes you don’t need many lyrics to get a message across. This track is all about spreading those good vibes.
Wh0 feat. Byron Stingily, “Happy People”: Another dance floor hit that’s all about celebrating and spreading love.
Purple Disco Machine, “Emotion”: This represents a brighter color for me. A feel good throwback jam that will make you say YES to everything!!!
Kanye West feat. T-Pain, “Good Life”: I always play an edit of this in my sets. Kayne is talking about the “Good Life” to him. I hope each and every person finds the good life for them too.
Throttle and Earth, Wind & Fire, “September”: This track got a new boost of energy from Throttle’s remix. Remembering good times can’t help but put a smile on your face.
Young Bombs feat. Aloe Blacc: Aloe Blacc says it best. Today is always a better day for love than the day before. To take things one day at a time. Aloe is THE MAN!!!
Needtobreathe feat. Gavin DeGraw, “Brother”: Huge fan of Wilder Woods. He wrote this one in his other band, Needtobreathe. “Brother” is about being there for loved ones when they’re going through a tough time. Something that everyone needs. Spreading the power of love and positively will lift those up that are feeling down.
