Following an international deal struck last month with Warner Music’s Elektra Records, Masked Wolf has pounced on a partnership with Teamwrk Records and ADA/Warner Music Australia for Australia and New Zealand.
Masked Wolf emerged as a leader of the pack in Australia’s hip-hop scene with 2020’s “Astronaut In The Ocean,” which has amassed over 86 million streams on Spotify and more than 45 million hits on YouTube.
“Astronaut” is currently sitting at No. 13 on the Global Spotify chart, with over 2.2 million streams on the platform in a single day. And it’s sky high on the Shazam Top 200 chart, at No. 3, and it debuted at No. 1 last month on Australia’s Independent Singles chart.
The Sydney rapper (real name Harry Michael) has been riding the wave since the 2018 release of his debut single “Speed Racer.”
Ever since, he has tackled mental health and wellbeing in his lyrics.
‘Astronaut In The Ocean’ touches on mental depression, how I was stuck in a place of anxiety and feeling low,” he tells Tone Deaf. “‘Night Rider’ is about how I overthink certain situations but feel like I am more true to myself when I am in the late night. ‘Numb’ is about how I felt about peer pressuring, people always used to say it’s not cool if I don’t come out and drink, why aren’t you partying. It was the song I made to show it’s OK to be you and not something others want you to be.”
Masked Wolf’s career took another leap forward when he unleashed his freestyle rapping skills on Triple J’s “Bars of Steel,” and in recent months, he was tipped by Rolling Stone and Shazam in their annual “artists to watch” features.
The new deal represents the “perfect next step” to give the artist “the push his music deserves in this home territory, alongside his continued success overseas,” reads a statement.
Dan Rosen, president of Warner Music Australia, is keen to see his company’s new signing reach the next level. “I am thrilled to welcome Masked Wolf to the ADA/Warner Australia family and to partner with Teamwrk Records,” he explains. “It is incredible to see the impact that Masked Wolf is already having around the world, and we cannot wait to work together to build his success here in his home country.”
Anthony Staun, head of streaming at Teamwrk Records adds: “This has been an incredible moment for not only Australian hip-hop but also locally grown artists in general. We have seen unprecedented growth and numbers overseas and we are excited to partner with a local major that will help mark MW’s home country with the same success.”
