Late last month, Martin Garrix teased a preview of his newest release, a remix of Bassjackers’ monster tune “Crackin'” that somehow gets more monstrous in Garrix’s hands. As a CODE Friday special, you can listen to an exclusive preview of Garrix’s “Crackin'”remix here:
“When I listened to the original of ‘Crackin,’ it gave me inspiration immediately to do something crazy with it,” Garrix tells Billboard. “I started working on the track and whenever I asked someone to listen to it the reaction was really good!”
Originally released as a free track for their fans, Bassjackers’ Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst say “Crackin'” became a surprise festival favorite last summer. When it came time to officially release it as a single, they wanted to offer a new version, thus the Garrix remix.
Garrix is still riding high on his breakout success of 2013 with “Animals” still lodged on the Hot 100 chart (it drops to No. 59 from 51 this week) and in the Top 10 of the Dance/Electronic songs chart. Earlier this week, the track was certified Gold by the RIAA.
His latest single, a collaboration with Jay Hardway titled “Wizards,” establishes Garrix’s sound as a producer: hard-hitting and darkly melodic. And while Bassjackers gave their fellow Netherlander a strong head start with their original, Garrix’s edit of “Crackin” highlights his knack for turning up the voltage on another artist’s work.
Garrix embarks on his first US tour later this month, kicking off the seven-date We Are Animals tour at Pacha in New York City on January 31. His remix of “Crackin'” is available January 20 from Spinnin Records.
