MTV turned 35 earlier this week — crazy, right? So much has changed since that little channel dedicated to music videos first turned on in 1981. The way we consume videos is drastically different, but the need for stellar videos is still as great, especially if you’re a giant EDM superstar like Martin Garrix.
Garrix’s songs soar in the major festival environment, but they can also bring to life humorous and touching tales of human existence. The 20-year-old DJ and producer has given the world a few unforgettable video moments, and before Garrix takes the Billboard Hot 100 Festival stage the weekend of Aug. 20-21 in Jones Beach, New York, Billboard Dance takes a loving look at a handful of them.
“Set Me Free”
Anything Dillon Francis does is hysterical. He’s the epic troll of EDM. For his collaboration with Garrix, the pair set off on a nonsensical adventure that starts on the Internet, explores a busy city center, expands into the weirdest reaches of the universe, and eventually ends in a fantastic music festival explosion. It’s hard to put into words. You’re better off just watching it.
This is the first of two collaborative tracks with Matisse & Sadko, and the artists decided to celebrate the double-hitter with a two-part video series. “Dragon” introduces us to the wildest woman to ever don a pair of roller skates. She’s a fighting, stealing, drinking, literal bitch on wheels, but give her a dank beat, and she’s gonna show you some sick moves. We’re in love.
“Break Through the Silence”
Our leading lady is back in part 2 of the Garrix, Matisse & Sadko saga. She just made up with some street dancer’s scooter, and she’s looking for revenge. She also ain’t looking too good. Are her wheeling and stealing ways getting the best of her? Much like a girl on a roller rink, what comes around goes around.
Who doesn’t want to watch home movies of baby-faced DJ Marty performing his first sets? This heartwarming montage of a music video shows Martin Garrix as he literally grows up before our eyes and rises through the ranks to become one of the biggest EDM superstars on the planet. It’s adorable, and so is this song.
“Don’t Look Down (Towel Boy and Girl)”
Another awesome two-parter, this time for the same song. “Don’t Look Down” features vocals from Usher and introduces us to the towel boy and girl from Le Garritsen Country Club. Here we watch as they fall in love with sour-faced club members, each in their own turn. Can they turn those frowns upside-down with their wild antics? Or maybe, just maybe, will they find some solace in each other?
