• For the first time since last September, we’ve now had two weeks in a row where the top-selling album shifted more than 400,000. Of course, last week, Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” bowed atop The Billboard 200 with the year’s biggest sales week — 623,000. This week, Maroon5 earns its first No. 1 album as “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” claims the chart’s pole position with 429,000. The band’s debut set, “Songs About Jane,” was released in 2002, bowed on The Billboard 200 in 2003 and lingered on the tally for 109 weeks, peaking at No. 6 in 2004. Its best sales week came during the Christmas frame of 2004, when it shifted 138,000 … Also, by selling 102,000 digital copies of “It Won’t,” the band sets a new watermark for the biggest week for a digital album. It beats the record of 84,000, which Linkin Park’s “Minutes” just set last week … Maroon5’s new album’s lead single, “Makes Me Wonder,” already hit No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 — another first for the band. VH1 is a big supporter, as the channel played the video for “Makes Me Wonder” 44 times during the week ending May 27, making it the most-played clip on the network. The single is still growing at radio, where it’s bulleted at Nos. 6 and 4 on the CHR/Top 40 and Adult Top 40 charts, respectively … Previous to the album’s release, the band performed on Nickelodeon’s “Kids Choice Awards” (March 31), “Saturday Night Live” (May 19), “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (May 21) and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” (May 23).
• Ozzy Osbourne’s first studio album in nearly six years gives the legend his highes-charting set, as “Black Rain” bows at No. 3 with 152,000 units. That’s not quite 1,000 less than his SoundScan-high week of 153,000 when “Down to Earth” started at No. 4 in 2001 … Figure that the solid sales for the new album are owed partially to a hot single (“I Don’t Wanna Stop”) and how a limited run of the set contained an offer that increased one’s chances to secure tickets for the Ozzfest tour, which may explain why 24% of the album’s first-week sales came from Internet retailers. Why roll the dice with going to a brick-and-mortar store and hoping they had the limited edition in stock when one could pre-order that set online? “I Don’t Wanna Stop” is spending its sixth week at No. 1 on the Rock radio airplay chart (formerly known as the Heritage Rock chart). Osbourne’s chart career dates back almost 37 years to Black Sabbath’s self-titled set bowing on The Billboard 200 Aug. 29, 1970 … At No. 4 on The Billboard 200, Young Jeezy’s U.S.D.A. enters with 95,000. The trio, comprising Jeezy, Slick Pulla and Blood Raw, also starts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The set features a remix of Jeezy’s hit single “Go Getta,” featuring R. Kelly, Jadakiss and Bun B.
• Rock band the Used debuts at No. 5 on The Billboard 200 with 92,000 units. The “Lies for the Liars” album is the act’s follow-up to 2004’s “In Love and Death,” which started at No. 6 with 93,000. The group’s single “The Bird and the Worm” already peaked at No. 11 on the Alternative/Modern Rock radio chart, making it the band’s highest-charting single on that tally … The “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” soundtrack blows in at No. 14 on The Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Top Soundtracks with 35,000. That’s the series’ highest-charting set on the big chart and its best sales week. The first album did 16,000 in its highest week; the second installment shifted 30,000 in its best frame. The first two soundtracks peaked at Nos. 75 and 22 on The Billboard 200 and Nos. 6 and 3 on Top Soundtracks … U.S.D.A. isn’t the only rap trio to bow this week, as Lil Boosie, Webbie and Foxx start at No. 17 on The Billboard 200 with “Survival of the Fittest.” The album also begins at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
• Other debuts on The Billboard 200 include the Bravery’s second album, “The Sun and the Moon,” at No. 24 with 22,000. The act’s self-titled debut opened at No. 18 with 34,000 in 2005. The Beach Boys notch their 48th entry on The Billboard 200 as the compilation “The Warmth of the Sun” bows at No. 40 with 14,000. Alacranes Musical claims its highest-charting album and best sales week as “Ahora Y Siempre” starts at No. 47 on The Billboard 200 with 13,000. It also naturally bows at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums. It’s the act’s first No. 1 on the latter chart. Rancid’s Tim Armstrong’s solo debut album, “A Poet’s Life,” bows at No. 59 on The Billboard 200 with 11,000, despite Armstrong releasing all of the album’s tracks online for free download.

• After more than three years and 11 charted singles, Big & Rich finally crack the top 10 on Hot Country Songs with “Lost in This Moment,” which gains 1.8 million audience impressions and rises 12-9 … The quirky duo just missed a top 10 when the highly commercial (871,000 digital downloads and counting) “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” stopped at No. 11 on the Aug. 7, 2004, chart. The new single introduces “Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace,” due at retail June 5 … Big & Rich’s chart count includes three collaborative outings with Cowboy Troy, Gretchen Wilson, Hank Williams Jr. and Van Zant. As a former member of Lonestar, Big & Rich’s John Rich has also charted a pair of solo singles: “I Pray for You” (2000) and “Forever Loving You” (2001).
• The Smashing Pumpkins extend their record string of consecutive top 10 hits at Alternative to 17 as “Tarantula” blasts 30-5. After falling shy of the top 10 with its first two charting tracks, the Billy Corgan-led group’s streak started in July 1993 when “Cherub Rock” peaked at No. 7. The Pumpkins’ prior top 10 was “Stand Inside Your Love,” seven years and two months ago … Blink-182 holds the second-longest consecutive top 10 string at 10 (from July 1999 to July 2004), and Linkin Park has the next-longest active streak of six straight top 10s … “Tarantula” earns Most Increased Plays and Airpower stripes at Alternative and Active Rock, debuting at No. 14 on the latter list.
• While Pink holds at No. 1 for a fourth week on the CHR/Top 40 chart, Rihanna pops 12-8 with “Umbrella.” It’s the latter singer’s sixth top 10 out of seven tries — only last year’s “We Ride” missed the top 10. (It clunked at No. 34.) It’s expected that with the digital single release of “Umbrella” last Tuesday, the single should rise to No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 once the list is compiled later today. If it hits No. 1 on the Hot 100, it will be her second chart-topper after 2006’s “SOS” … On the Triple A chart, Ryan Adams’ “Two” debuts at No. 22. It’s the singer/songwriter’s fourth single to reach the chart. His highest-charting single is 2001’s “New York, New York,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 that year. “Two” is the lead single from “Easy Tiger,” due June 26.
