Sticks and stones may break bones, but words descriptors such as “diva” and “high-maintenance” will never hurt Mariah Carey.
In an interview with The Guardian Monday (Oct. 5) about her new memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mimi didn’t denounce the “high-maintenance” label but embraced it in what journalist Hadley Freeman described on Twitter yesterday as “the greatest answer I have ever got to a question.”
“You know what? I don’t give a s–t. I f–king am high-maintenance because I deserve to be at this point. That may sound arrogant, but I hope you frame it within the context of coming from nothing,” the singer said during the interview. “If I can’t be high-maintenance after working my a– off my entire life, oh, I’m sorry — I didn’t realize we all had to be low maintenance. Hell, no! I was always high-maintenance, it’s just I didn’t have anyone to do the maintenance when I was growing up!”
And for any of the lambs who weren’t sure before, she sure let them know with a hilarious GIF from her days of judging American Idol. “Well, the cat’s out of the bag! Now you all know I’m high maintenance. Oh well,” MC responded in a quote tweet to Freeman.
