Mariah Carey is celebrating Diva Week — the weeklong stretch of her, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Diana Ross‘ birthdays — with a special tribute to Franklin on Thursday (March 25), which would have been her 79th birthday.
The two performed Franklin’s Grammy Hall of Fame record “Chain of Fools” for VH1 Divas Live in 1998, and Carey narrated the scene with an audio snippet from her latest memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
“She told the audience that she and ‘my newest girlfriend’ didn’t get to rehearse. ‘But she’s going to come out and join me.’ The band began ‘Chain of Fools,’ and I walked out on the stage,” Mimi says over the archival clip before their performance plays out. “Her energy was so powerful. I just kept my focus on her and sang when she told me to sing. And we did the song.”
“I ended with a bow and an ‘All hail the queen!’ How else do you exit a moment like that?” she recalls at the end of the performance. “And she just jeered to me and said, ‘Ms. Carey, that was enough for my soul.'”
While wishing the late Queen of Soul herself a good one, Carey noted she would be highlighting the other “incredible timeless QUEENS” and “‘Typical Aries’ (said like Ms. Franklin)” throughout the week. Khan’s birthday was on Tuesday, while Ross’ is on Friday, and Mimi’s is on Saturday.
