Following a recent New York Times article detailing Ryan Adams’ alleged sexual misconduct and psychologically manipulative behavior by several female musicians, Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore — who was also interviewed for the article — took to Instagram to share support for survivors.
“Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it’s always worth it,” Moore wrote on Thursday (Feb. 14) alongside the photo of her featured in the article. “My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard. #sisterhoodforever”
Moore and Adams got married in 2009, right before she released her sixth album. According to her account, Adams took over her music career and offered to work on her next album, but nothing came to fruition. “Music was a point of control for [Adams],” she said of her ex-husband, whom she accused of using psychological abuse to manipulate her. “He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument,'” Moore told the Times.
“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she continued.
In response to the article, Adams tweeted an apology to to those he hurt but said the “picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false.”
“As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly,” he wrote. “I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”
