Way back before dancehall was in Drake songs and pop rhythms across terrestrial United States radio, Major Lazer mined the Caribbean for every energetic flavor it had to offer. The then-duo comprised of Diplo and Switch helped bring international fusion to electronic dance floors, and when Switch left the group, Diplo continued the musical mission with true island talents Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. The trio has taken on the sounds of South America, Africa, Asia and more, and now, it’s coming for the best Colombia has to offer: “Mi Gente” superstar J Balvin.
Diplo, Balvin and Walshy Fire were pictured together posing in the neon streets of Medellin. “We got something very big planned for 2019,” Diplo captioned the image on Instagram.
It’s not the first time Balvin and the Lazers have gotten in the studio, either. The pair shared a tune with Sean Paul in 2017, “Buscando Huellas,” which peaked at No. 37 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
There has long been talk of a Major Lazer album in the works. Would this be yet another stand-alone single? Part of a greater experimental EP? Fans will have to stay tuned to find out.
