Madonna shared her life changing experiences in making the documentary films Truth or Dare and I Am Because We Are when accepting the Advocate for Change award at the 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday (May 4).
“When I made the film Truth or Dare, I had no idea I was going to inspire gay men to … have the courage to come out,” Madonna said during her acceptance speech at the Hilton Midtown.
The pop superstar later shared the eye-opening experience of making her 2008 film I AM Because We Are, which explored AIDS orphans in the African country Malawi.
“Fighting for all marginalized people was a duty and an honor I could not turn my back on, nor will I ever,” she explained, noting that four of her six children were adopted from Malawi.
Madonna, who described herself as “freedom fighter” wrapped up her speech by quoting a line from her new Madame X song “Extreme Oxidant.” “Life is a circle, death and loss brought me new life, brought me to life, brought me to love,” she said.
The 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards will air on Logo on Sunday (May 12) at 8 p.m. ET.
