The Queen of Pop ruled at the Met Gala with a performance divinely matched with the occasion.
When organizers announced the 2018 theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” the stage was set for one particular artist to shine. And so it was when Madonna appeared on the red carpet, dressed in an over-the-top all-black Jean Paul Gaultier design. And later, she delivered a theatrical performance of “Like a Prayer,” her controversial hit from 1989.
It was a match made in heaven.
Video captured from inside the party shows a habit of monks on stage, indistinguishable from one another in their brown robes. As Gregorian chants filled the room, the spotlight fell on one. But this was no ordinary monk. With the hood off, Madonna proceeded to belt out her classic which, on its release, was condemned by the Vatican for its music video which featured depictions of interracial love and cross burnings. Full marks for nailing the theme.
Madonna also performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Earlier, Madonna arrived at the party in a flamboyant design crowned with a gold diamond headpiece made entirely of crosses. Stylist Eyob Yohannes told People it was the look of an “Immaculate Goth Queen.” Check out Yohannes’ Instagrams below.
