If you’re a fan of Madeon and Porter Robinson, chances are 100 percent you’re also a fan of RPGs, riddles, puzzles, secret codes, hidden messages, treasure maps and any sort of quest shrouded in mystery that rewards intelligence, perseverance and sheer geekiness.
If that’s true for you, go thank Madeon and wish him a happy belated birthday. He just gifted you the most fun you’ll have all day, and it leads to a secret “evil” edit of his and Robinson’s collaborative single “Shelter.”
He shared a beautiful sunset picture to Instagram and Twitter thanking fans for the birthday wishes in front of the Los Angeles skyline, his new home. It looks like any other promotional shot, until you realize there is a secret message hidden in the image. It’s actually a link written in the Madeon alphabet, his own typeface created from lines of dots and a running theme of Easter eggs throughout his career.
The “Evil Shelter” edit is deliciously dark, a true corruption of the original’s bright optimism. If you want to cheat and cut straight to the track, you can preview and download it online. If you want to earn the right to hear it’s menacing melody, get to sleuthing. It’s worth it, because the real download comes with extra goodies. We won’t tell you what they are, and we aren’t giving you any clues. That would spoil all the fun. Happy hunting, Gunters.
