Luis Silberwasser, a veteran TV executive who was most recently EVP and Chief content officer for Discovery Networks International, has been appointed president of the Telemundo Network. Silberwasser will take over the post in August, reporting to Joe Uva, Chairman, Hispanic Enterprises and Content, NBCUniversal. He will be based out of Miami.
Telemundo, a division of NBCUniversal and the second largest Spanish-language network in the country, has been without a president since the departure of Emilio Romano last October. Since then, Uva has had oversight of both Telemundo and sister channel mun2. Just last week, Uva announced the appointment of Ruben Mendiola as president of mun2.
In his new role, Silberwasser will have overall responsibility for the Telemundo broadcast network, including Telemundo Studios, which is the leading producer of original Spanish-language primetime content for U.S. Hispanics. Silberwasser will work closely both with the Telemundo and the Hispanic Enterprises and Content senior team with a focus on increased market share and profitability.
“Luis is a world-class operating executive with exceptional management, content and leadership experience,” said Uva in a statement. “His deep understanding of the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets, coupled with his strong track record in successfully building global brands and developing and producing high quality content make him the ideal leader to fulfill the growth potential of Telemundo Network.”
Silberwasser, a native of Cali, Colombia with a Harvard MBA, has long worked for global networks. Prior to his post with Discovery — where he oversaw content strategy for DNI’s portfolio of channels in international markets—he was SVP, Content Group for Discovery Networks Latin America/U.S. Hispanic. During his tenure, Silberwasser launched and served as General Manager for the company’s two channels geared for the U.S. Hispanic market — Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia.
