Ludacris is on top of the world, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. Having outsold Elvis Presley’s “2nd to None” last week to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with “Chicken & Beer” (Disturbing Tha Peace/Def Jam), Ludacris isn’t resting, or even making a big deal about it.
“I’m a real down to Earth person,” he told Billboard.com last night (Oct. 20) in Chicago. Ludacris is in the beginning stages of what promises to be an extended blitz to promote the new album. He took a turn headlining the final run of Miller Genuine Draft’s “Pure Night Out” promotion last night Chicago’s intimate Metro.
Of course, he called family and friends to let them know he was numero uno, but he lets others do the serious bragging for him. “If you want to say it, I’ll stamp it,” he said. His first call was to his mother. “Your mom always want you to have something to fall back on, not ‘Mom, I want to be a rapper,'” he says. “It’s like, ‘Yeah Mom, feel good, I just sold this many records in one week.'”
For now, Ludacris is doing a small tour of intimate venues and radio station-sponsored shows, but he plans a full-scale tour early next year. Details are still pending, although Ludacris promises that the Disturbing Tha Peace posse will be on the road with him.
And he plans to eat a lot of chicken on the road. The best, he says, is from Gladys Knight’s & Ron Winans’ Waffles and Chicken in Atlanta, and Roscoe’s in Los Angeles. Of course, he’s quick to add that the very best chicken is his mom’s. “She makes all kinds, but fried is the standard,” he said.
