The Beatles’ music is reborn in “Love,” the Cirque du Soleil theatrical extravaganza now playing at the Mirage in Las Vegas. This week, the music from the production, which blends bits and pieces of disparate tracks from throughout the band’s discography, hits stores via Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol. It was assembled by Beatles producer George Martin and his son, Giles, from the original master tapes.
The set contains a mash-up of “Drive My Car,” “The Word” and “What You’re Doing,” a new take on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with a fresh string arrangement, a version of “Strawberry Fields Forever” that grows from John Lennon’s original demo through to its final take, and a blend of “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” with “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and “Helter Skelter.”
“George and Giles did such a great job combining these tracks,” says Ringo Starr. “It’s really powerful for me and I even heard things I’d forgotten we’d recorded.” Paul McCartney adds, “This album puts the Beatles back together again, because suddenly there’s John and George with me and Ringo. It’s kind of magical.”
“It’s been an odyssey, a journey and it’s been a lot of fun along the way,” George Martin says. “This music is to convey the unanimity of the Beatles. It was a great privilege for me.”
