Minneapolis radio station KTCZ (Cities 97) sees its latest charity compilation album blast in at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart this week — a record high for the long-running series.
The live effort, “Cities 97 Sampler // Live From Studio C: Vol. 25,” sold 40,000 copies in its debut frame — the entire production run of the annual album. It’s the 25th release in the series, and it features live performances recorded at the station over the past year from fun., Passenger, Phillip Phillips and more.
The “Sampler” was available exclusively at local Target stores in Minneapolis, and sold for $32.97. 100% of the album’s proceeds benefit local charities. (Due to publishing and label gratis licensing restrictions for charity albums, the production run of the album was limited to 40,000.)
According to KTCZ, the compilation has raised $11.5 million for charity since its launch in 1989. This year’s edition alone brought in $1.24 million for 41 local charities, including Helping Paws of Minnesota, Special Olympics Minnesota, Rock the Cause and Kids Against Hunger Minneapolis.
Last year’s Sampler featured such acts as Ed Sheeran, the Lumineers, Imagine Dragons and Of Monsters and Men. It debuted and peaked at No. 16, selling 35,000. The Cities series has logged six entries since 2008, when the Billboard 200 chart began allowing retailer-exclusive titles to chart.
Two years ago the 23rd “Sampler” made a splash, by scoring the rights to use a live performance by Adele. In turn, the 2011 album reached a then-high of No. 12 on the chart.
