The Who and Roger Waters have been lined up as headliners for a new summer festival event in central London.
Live Nation (previously known as Clear Channel Entertainment) will produce the two-day event, Hyde Park Calling, which rolls out July 1-2 in the U.K. capital’s most famous park.
Waters will perform Pink Floyd’s iconic “Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety on the first evening of the festival. The last time Waters played in the United Kingdom was in July 2005 when he briefly re-united with his former Pink Floyd bandmates for the London leg of the Live 8 concerts.
The Who will close the second night of the program, exactly a year to the day since they also played at Live 8 in London.
Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were on hand this morning at a launch party in London’s Hard Rock Café, sponsor of the two-day event. Daltrey cryptically suggested that the performance could close curtains on the band’s career. Hyde Park Calling will “give me the chance to play with the band I love. Maybe for the last time,” he commented.
Texas and Razorlight are the only other bands so far confirmed on the bill. Live Nation says “many more acts” will be announced in the coming weeks.
Hyde Park Calling will “piggy-back” on an existing concerts infrastructure Live Nation will have in place, the concert promoter’s managing director Stuart Galbraith tells Billboard.biz. Through a deal with the Royal Parks authority, the market-leading concert promoter has a full-line up of events booked over three consecutive weeks in the summer, including the June 17 Foo Fighters headliner and the Wireless Festival from June 21-June 25.
Live Nation launched the Wireless Festival in 2005 in an attempt to establish a rival to the long-running Glastonbury Festival, which is on hiatus this year. The concert promoter lent the Wireless Festival infrastructure to Live 8.
