Welcome to #TBT Mixtape, Billboard’s new series showcasing artists’ very own throwback-themed playlists, exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. The curated set features the artists’ favorite tracks from their youth and childhood.
This week’s spin comes from Penguin Prison. The electro-pop titan (the moniker of artist/producer Chris Glover) returned last week with the late-night, hands-in-the-air comeback anthem “Turn It Up.”
Inspired by the current cultural climate, the soulful cut was written about the need for everyone to raise their voices to fight for what they believe in. “Why do some people seem so hell-bent on trying to prevent others from living their lives the way they want to when they aren’t harming anyone,” Penguin Prison muses. “It’s not loud enough, turn it up means be heard; raise your voice; don’t become complacent. It’s not normal what’s happening right now and we must remind ourselves and others of this.”???????
Today, Glover is looking back to his youth, sharing this week’s #TBT Mixtape, featuring Bonnie Raitt, Little Richard, NOFX, and more.
“This playlist contains selections from the music my mom would play in the house when I was little, to music I started to gravitate to on my own: my punk phase, post punk / emo, and hip hop,” Glover says.
Give the set a spin and also check out some retro snaps of the artist below.
