Welcome to #TBT Mixtape, Billboard’s new series that showcases artists’ very own throwback-themed playlists exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. The curated set features the artists’ favorite tracks from their youth and childhood.
This week’s spin comes from LPX‘s Lizzy Plapinger. The frontwoman of electro-pop duo MS MR and co-founder of Neon Gold Records (Charli XCX, Christine and the Queens) feted the release of her debut solo EP Bolt in the Blue earlier this year. The set marked a sonic shift for the musician, who embraced her roots as a major fan of alternative, and specifically the gritty, raw output of The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bloc Party in the 2000s.
Today, Plapinger continues that retro lean, with this week’s #TBT Mixtape, inspired by her high school mixtape glory days and the blog explosion of the 2000s.
“My music taste in high school was absolutely the sum of my life in London (XFM radio, Zane Lowe, Push club nights, Rough Trade, gigs at KoKo etc.), my obsession with and the explosion of blog culture, and the shared mixtapes between me and my best friend (and now business partner) Derek [Davies, co-founder of Neon Gold Records],” Plapinger shares. “Music had always been important to me but it wasn’t until I was a teenager in a seemingly golden era of alternative and indie that I really sunk my teeth into it and it became synonymous with who I was.”
