As part of Billboard‘s Black History Month celebration, we’ve asked Black artists spanning all genres to compile their own unique playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. Each song they’ve chosen represents their love for the culture across the diaspora — from childhood favorites to songs that make them feel free. Today, Lion Babe‘s Jillian Hervey shares her soundtrack.
“Black history is my history. Black music scored my childhood, and that music directly linked to the overall message I have learned and carried with me when I reflect on being Black and experiencing Black life. I am fortunate to have come from a family of music lovers, but overall I feel music has always been a way that black people connect with each other. My playlist includes the artists that have always stayed with me and my family along the way, and also represents the diverse the sounds blacks artist have. We are in a great moment today artistically where true voices can emerge, because our community is fueling each other by supporting us to be unapologetically free to express ourselves in whatever way we see fit.”
Lion Babe recently released the funky video for their new Leikeli47-assisted single “The Wave,” the latest track from the forthcoming album Cosmic Wind (out March 29). Listen to the playlist and check out the new video below.
