The music and fashion worlds have always collided, and there’s no sign of a halt anytime soon. Fashion weeks have been filled with musical artists’ over the past few years, making fashion news by not only attending runway shows, but designing collections. Most recently, Kanye West with Adidas, Rihanna with Puma, and now, Lil Yachty with Nautica.
Usually, celebrities have much to say about their personal experiences with fashion, views on style, and why they decided to design what they did, with who they did, and in the way that they did—as if they always knew they’d be where they are now: designing. Yachty, however, at just 20 years old, is unsure of where he wants to take the fashion design aspect of his career. “I wasn’t looking [to do] this… I’m not a designer,” the “One Night” rapper told Billboard.
Seemingly, though, it’s one of his favorite brands to wear and is the perfect marriage for a collab, given the names of the two—Lil Yachty (also often referring to himself as Lil Boat) and Nautica. “I’d been wearing it; I kept tagging them. I dunno, I just kinda got their attention and they hit me up,” he told GQ of how he got started with the marine-themed brand. Match made in heaven, no?
For his “The Lil Yachty Collection” by Nautica New York Fashion Week presentation on Thursday (Sept. 7), the recently-appointed creative designer wore a sherpa varsity jacket from the collection over a classic white tee—along with, of course, a rack of layered blinged-out diamond chains.
In the smoldering upper room of an NYC bar, a small but diverse set of models stood around in logo-patched puffer coats and vests, sherpa varsity jackets, bucket hats, shorts, and graphic tees with a too cool for school twist. Focusing on the classic color scheme of red, yellow, green, and navy blue, Yachty designed the collection using vintage ’90s Nautica styles as inspiration.
The 19-piece exclusive heritage capsule collection, available this October, arrives just in time for the upcoming holiday season.
