Cyberpunk meets lush hip-pop in Lexie Liu’s music video for her new single “Like a Mercedes.” It’s the first song released by Liu since the Chinese artist signed with Asian hip-hop collective 88rising.
Virtual reality is taken to the next level in this neon-hued dream date, which proves to be part of a video game. It is fronted by Liu’s captivating delivery of the smooth song’s bilingual lyrics about love and obsession, and backed by hypnotizing beats and otherworldly synths. “When everything between us flows into reality/ Make it real/ It’s too good to be true for you and me,” she sings in Chinese, with translations embedded into the music video.
The 19-year-old Liu grew up in China and studied in the U.S. before gaining popularity in South Korea during the fifth season of K-Pop Star, a popular competition show. After returning to China to pursue a career there, she released her trilingual dynamic first single “Coco Made Me Do It” in 2017 featuring Korean-American rapper Nafla. She performed at SXSW in 2017, and this is her first Stateside release.
