Next month, Leona Lewis will return to U.S. retailer with “Christmas, With Love,” her first holiday effort, due out Dec. 3 on Syco/RCA Records. The British singer tells Billboard that the 10-song effort, which includes the lead single “One More Sleep” as well as two other original tracks, may very well influence her next full-length, which she hopes to record early next year.
“It’s really given me a new inspiration for doing [my next] album — kind of doing that throwback, soul, Motown vibe,” says Lewis. “It’s really inspired me to continue doing something along those lines for my studio album… For me, this was probably the most fun I’ve ever had doing a record.”
Lewis did not begin 2013 with the intention of recording a Christmas album. After releasing her third album, “Glassheart,” overseas in October 2012, the “Bleeding Love” singer toured across Europe from April through July, and thought she would wind down the year by re-entering the studio to start on her fourth album.
“I thought about doing [a Christmas album] for a while,” says Lewis, “and after my third record, I wanted to do something a bit different.” The 28-year-old singer began recording “Christmas, With Love” over the summer in Brighton, trying to capture the Christmas spirit during a particularly warm summer in the U.K. “We turned up the A/C, basically,” Lewis says with a laugh.
Produced by Biff Stannard and Ash Howes, “Christmas, With Love” will be promoted through a handful of appearances in Europe and in New York City leading up to next month’s release, while “One More Sleep” has become available at all digital retailers. “Hopefully I’ll do a proper tour next year,” says Lewis, who will also make her feature film debut in the musical “Holiday!,” due out next summer.
