The new Fox series Star is set to debut on Dec. 14, and Billboard has an exclusive sneak peek of Lenny Kravitz in his role portraying the fictional rock star, Roland Crane.
The show — created by Lee Daniels — stars Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt, and centers around three young singers desperate for a shot at stardom. Naomi Campbell and Tyrese Gibson also appear in guest roles.
In the clip, Kravitz’s character’s daughter Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) wants to make music that feeds her soul. She wants to work with Star (Jude Demorest), but her dad doesn’t approve and even calls her a “talentless brat.” Alexandra then takes off with the girls and heads to Atlanta to pursue her dream.
“The character of Roland Crane is nothing new to me,” Kravitz explains. “We are musicians, but he’s not supportive of what his daughter is doing.”
Daniels said the father-daughter dynamic was inspired by the real life relationship of Kravitz and his daughter, Zoe.
Latifah added that Kravitz embraces the “cold, callous” character.
Star will air 9 p.m. Wednesdays on Fox.
