With five nods, English soul singer Lemar has the most nominations for Britain’s 10th annual Music of Black Origin Awards, to be held Sept. 22 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Lemar is nominated in the best album category for his sophomore set “Time To Grow” (Sony BMG), and his track “If There’s Any Justice” is up for best single and best video. The artist, who reached the final of the BBC talent show “Fame Academy,” is also up for best R&B act and U.K. act of the year.
American singer John Legend is up for three categories, while Snoop Dogg and Mariah Carey took home two nominations apiece.
Members of the public can vote on 12 of the 16 categories. A MOBO-appointed panel will decide the icon of the decade, outstanding achievement award and lifetime achievement awards. A new category, best African act, is open to votes cast only in Africa.
BBC1 will broadcast the gala in Britain on Sept. 23.
