Former teen idol Leif Garrett pleaded no contest on Friday to possession of heroin after he was arrested last February in downtown Los Angeles.
Garrett, a 1970s child actor and pop star whose disco-era hits included “I Was Made for Dancing” was not immediately sentenced, and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Sterling did not set a sentencing date as Garrett is expected to enter a drug treatment program instead of serve jail time.
The 48-year-old singer and actor was stopped by police on February 1 at a subway station because he was exhibiting “pronounced symptoms” of drug use, such as “shaking and sweating,” police said at the time. Officers searched him and found the heroin.
Garret has battled drug abuse for years. In 2006, he was arrested for possession of heroin and sentenced to 90 days in jail after opting out of drug treatment.
