Most people put their pants on one leg at a time. Not James Murphy, the former frontman of LCD Soundsystem, who pops on his pajama bottoms with both legs in a single fluid motion in the trailer for the band documentary “Shut Up and Play the Hits.”
The new film, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22, chronicles the run-up to and performance of the epic last show of the critically beloved indie group, held in New York City’s Madison Square Garden last April.
“If it’s a funeral… let’s have the best funeral ever,” a tagline reads, between showcasing a joyous crowd and guest performers including Reggie Watts and members of the Arcade Fire.
Though the band is over, the story is not: the video ends with Murphy, alone in an empty studio, staring at his instruments.
The film was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace; its credits also include director Spike Jonze, who contributed camera work, and journalist Chuck Klosterman, whose narration appears in the trailer.
