Lauryn Hill is a free woman.
The former Fugees singer has been released from federal prison, the same prison that inspired Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” as noted by TMZ, after serving a three-month sentence for tax evasion.
Hill reported for her sentence on July 8 after failing to pay taxes on approximately $1.5 million earned between 2005 and 2007. She served her time in a minimum security prison in Danbury, Conn., in open dormitory-style living quarters where inmates are expected to work jobs including maintenance, food service or landscaping.
Now that Hill has been released, she will be under parole supervision for a year. She will spend the next three months under home confinement, according to the Associated Press.
While “Orange Is the New Black” takes place in a Litchfield, N.Y., prison, the story’s inspiration — Piper Kerman, who serves as an advisor on the series — actually served time in the Danbury prison where Hill was locked up.
On Thursday, Hill released a new song titled “Consumerism.” The track was written before Hill’s incarceration and mixed while she was behind bars. Listen to “Consumerism” here.
