New York-based singer/songwriter Laura Cantrell has signed with Matador. Her as-yet-untitled label debut is due in late spring and features contributions from Calexico’s Joey Burns, John Convertino and Paul Niehaus, former Yo La Tengo guitarist Dave Schramm and multi-instrumentalist Mark Spencer. J.D. Foster (Marc Ribot, Nancy Sinatra) is producing.
Cantrell’s first two albums were released in the United States by Diesel Only and in the United Kingdom by Shoeshine/Spit & Polish. “I am thrilled to release my next album on Matador, a label I’ve followed since its beginning 15 years ago, that has released the music of great artists like Yo La Tengo, Cat Power and Guided By Voices,” the artist says.
Cantrell is also the host of “The Radio Thrift Shop,” which airs Saturday afternoons on WFMU-Jersey City, N.J., and WXHD-Mount Hope, N.Y.
The lone gig on her schedule at present is Feb. 24 at the Allen Room in New York’s new Time Warner Center, which will be part of Lincoln’s Center’s American Songbook series.
