Singer/songwriter Cyndi Lauper will make her Broadway debut next year in “The Threepenny Opera,” playing the prostitute Jenny in the satirical musical about a highwayman and his sweetheart.
The role of Jenny was originally slated to be played by Edie Falco (“The Sopranos”), who recently dropped out of the cast. The show will also star actors Alan Cumming (“Cabaret”) and Ana Gasteyer (“Saturday Night Live”) an, as previously reported, singer/songwriter Nellie McKay.
“The Threepenny Opera” was first seen on Broadway in 1933. The translation of the musical “Die Dreigroschenoper” by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill is a satire of thieves, prostitutes and dashing highwayman Mack the Knife, to be portrayed by Cumming this latest version.
Directed by Scott Elliott, the Roundabout Theatre Company production is due to start previews in late March at Studio 54 with opening night set for April 20.
