The sole shooter at the Route 91 Harvest Festival has been confirmed dead, according to Las Vegas authorities.
CNN reports that the gunman fired from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, where Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said officers confronted the suspect. Authorities say the man, who has been identified as 64-year-old white male Stephen Paddock, is dead, reports ABC News. Lombardo stated that the gunman was a “lone actor” in the shooting.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say Paddock was a local resident. The LVMPD had tweeted that they were searching for two vehicles associated with the shooter, as well as a person of interest (believed to be the suspect’s girlfriend), an Asian-American female named Marilou Danley. In a second police briefing, Lombardo said they are confident they located the vehicles and Danley, but it’s still unclear as to whether she is in custody.
Police are currently executing a search warrant on Paddock’s room, according to Lombardo, and there are officers at his residence who will be executing a search warrant shortly.
After initially reporting that at least 20 people were killed and 100 were injured, Lombardo updated that number in the second police briefing: At least 50 people are confirmed dead, and more than 200 are injured after the horrifying incident, making it the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. Jason Aldean, who was on stage at the time of the shooting, has confirmed that he and his crew are okay in an Instagram post.
Lombardo asked for those who have video that may be of benefit to police to bring it to the Las Vegas police department headquarters.
