Instead, the most recent Bond installment, this fall’s Spectre, featured an appropriately sorrowful anthem from Sam Smith called “Writing’s on the Wall.” Del Rey seems to feel someone missed the other writing on the wall — that at least two of her songs, “24” and “Swan Song” off her last album Honeymoon, would have been perfect additions to such other famous Bond songs as Shirley Bassey‘s iconic “Goldfinger” from 1964 or even Adele‘s more recent “Skyfall,” which won a Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe in 2013.
“I would’ve done it if I was asked but I wasn’t asked,” says Del Rey. “I love all of the Bond music that’s been put out over the years and I love soundtracks in general.”
In October, Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” made history as the first James Bond theme to hit No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Top 100 Singles Chart. He told the Los Angeles Times this week that despite some fans’ criticism that the song is “too sensitive” for Bond, “That’s what I do. I thought it would be really different to have a song that was like a diary entry from Bond.”
We can easily imagine Del Rey writing that entry, too — in fact, almost every song in the Bond catalog already sounds like it could have been written by the “Summertime Sadness” singer. Maybe a cover album is in order — Lana Del Rey doing “Diamonds Are Forever” anyone?
