A new trailer for the first-ever authorized documentary about Kurt Cobain, HBO’s Montage of Heck, written, directed and produced by Brett Morgen has surfaced online.
The preview takes viewers through the Nirvana frontman’s happy childhood, his ambitious artistic drive and wanting a normal life with wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who’s an executive producer on the film.
10 Insights Learned From ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’
Cobain is shown in family movies, playing guitar and blowing out a birthday candle as a voiceover asks, “Who are you?” and the future Nirvana frontman responds “I’m Kurt Cobain.”
After another voiceover introduces Cobain as “an underdeveloped, immature little dude that never got laid,” another one of the documentary participants is heard saying, “I don’t know how anyone deals with having your whole family reject you.”
From there, the trailer takes viewers on a frantic journey, with those Morgen interviewed, including Cobain’s bandmate Krist Novoselic, recalling how he was “becoming unruly,” “hated being humiliated,” and “you could see the rage come out.”
Amidst this, Cobain had an ambitious artistic drive, with one of Morgen’s interviewees heard saying his “goal was to write as well as he could, play as well as he could,” over frenzied clips of Nirvana performing.
The trailer ends with home movies of Cobain with Love and Frances Bean as a baby as voiceovers explain that “he wanted normalcy” and to “feel like he wasn’t alone.”

Love, being interviewed, adds, “We were all he had.”
The film, which The Hollywood Reporter‘s Boyd van Hoeij described as “something akin to a stream-of-consciousness autobiography,” draws on thousands of pages of diaries, notes, sketches and a lot of previously unseen home-video footage.
Morgen had unprecedented access to the Cobain family’s personal archives and even animates Cobain’s drawings to recreate scenes from his life, accompanied by orchestral versions of some of Nirvana’s biggest hits.
The film made by HBO Documentary Films, Universal Pictures International and Public Road Productions premiered at Sundance.
