Not to be outdone by nearby Hoquiam, Wash., which announced an official “Nirvana Day” for this upcoming April, Kurt Cobain’s hometown of Aberdeen, Wash., will celebrate “Kurt Cobain Day” this Feb. 20.
According to Rolling Stone, the Aberdeen city council and Mayor Bill Simpson voted yesterday (Jan. 22) in favor of making the day a commemorative, annual event in honor of the Nirvana frontman, celebrated each year on his birthday.
“Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements,” a statement made by the city, as reported on KXRO, read.

The special day precedes Nirvana’s induction into the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April 10, along with KISS, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates and Cat Stevens.
Hoquiam’s Nirvana-honoring day will be held the same day as the band’s Rock Hall induction.
